What can you use the app for?

OneRiot is an online search engine that allows you to find websites just the same as any other search engine; however unlike others this looks at the living web not the past. You can search for news, videos and products using oneriot and you will find the things that people are talking about the most. OneRiot is similar to other search engines in that it searches and catalogs what’s on the internet so that you can search through it. However what’s different is how the information is prioritized. The information is prioritized based upon the popularity of the site within the community. This makes it really easy to find things that are popular. All of the results offered by oneriot are fresh and current; it’s like a real time search engine. OneRiot refer to this as the pulse, they call the most popular web content the pulse. If there are any stories which are very popular then they are said to be the pulse which means it will appear higher up the search results. The pulse is identified with the help of millions of readers who let the site know what they are reading and what they are interested in. Because of this the preferences can change very quickly and what’s popular one day might not be popular the next day.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

OneRiot was launched in alpha on 11th November 2008 by Robert Reich and Peter Newcomb. The investors of OneRiot include Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Spark Capital and Appian Ventures. In December 2008 oneriot released integration with Facebook connect. The OneRiot search Web Slice was featured in the first release of IE8. In March 2009 OneRiot created a Facebook toolbar. In October 2010 OneRiot discontinued the search portal.

What are the differences to other apps?

OneRiot is a unique web search engine that’s nothing like most other search engine. This is because the results are indexed real time based on the current popularity of the results. It doesn’t look at the number of times keywords are mentioned, instead it look at the popularity. Many traditional search engines have Wikipedia entries towards the top because they have a lot of useful content, however this might not be the news you are looking for. OneRiot features content which people are currently reading which shows it’s in date and useful.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

OneRiot looks and feels almost exactly the same as any other search engine. They also show a list of popular videos down the side of the screen and popular stories which makes for an interesting read.

How does the registration process work?

You can use the oneriot search engine without registration and there are no accounts offered. You can however download a toolbar if you wish which will help them to rank their search results more accurately as the sites you visit will affect their results.

What does it cost to use the application?

Using OneRiot is completely free; there don’t even seem to be any adverts anywhere on the site. This could change in the future when the site is launched out of beta.

Who would you recommend the application to?

OneRiot is an interesting search engine which may be useful for anyone looking to find content about current news and events. The results are ranked according to their current popularity which does make it quite easy to find sites which are of use to you. OneRiot already has a strong competitor because Google also integrates Google News in the search results. We are not convinced that OneRiot offers better news results.

  • Search for websites on the internet
  • Sites are ranked according to their real time popularity
  • List of popular videos and stories on main page
  • Download toolbar to help contribute to the site
